Growth & spiritual maturity in Christ is an option. Think of a little seedling for example. Your heart is the rich soil in which the seed of Gods love for you was initially planted. That seed needs attention and time to grow. You can’t just walk away from it. You need to make sure it’s planted down deep and watered. You have to pay careful attention to the moisture of the soil & be sure that this moisture is kept consistent. Other factors include maintaining the soil temperature, feeding the seedling & supplying enough light. How interestingly similar these steps are to our walk as a Christian and to our growth & maturity in Christ.
We can accept Christ’s precious gift of grace and free salvation to those who believe in Him but this is the first step. While it is the most beautiful and crucial step to plant this seed in our hearts, it is just the beginning of what can be so many beautiful things in our lives. You know, the fruits of a life well lived for Jesus.
We must want to know more of Him and to grow in Him. To be aligned with Jesus is to want to see this little seed grow into the flourishing green fruit of our lives. It requires, in one word, nurturing.
To grow in our walk with Jesus means we nurture this relationship. Nurture means to care for and encourage the growth and development of. We don’t just stop at the planting of His seed deep down in our hearts. To know more of Him is to spend time with Him. To know more of Jesus is to hunger after the things He hungers after and to focus on the things that matter most to Him.
To make sure that the soil of our hearts doesn’t dry up and that we feed this most important of relationships in our lives, I would like to share some very simple things that helped me to grow in my walk with Jesus. I hope these things help you because in this world we live in, it can be all too easy to miss the most important things and this my dear friends, is of eternal importance. It extends pass the stresses of life and the “mundane” to knowing our Savior and honoring Him well with the precious fruit of our lives. It means we get serious about our relationship with Him.
I am convinced if you build time into EACH day for the following 3 simple practices, you’ll be amazed at how your relationship with Jesus grows from a tiny seedling into a flourishing fruit producing life. A life that honors Jesus well and maintains eternal perspective.
- Carve out time for His Word each day. The seed is planted deep in your heart but the story of that seed is of such importance. From Old Testament to New, to come into a deeper understanding of what Jesus really did for us is so….KEY. To know His Word and the invaluable truths upon which you can now stake your fleshly & eternal life is one of the most important steps to growing closer to Jesus. Ephesians 4:14-15 says “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, blown here & there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, Christ.”
- Pray DAILY. This can be so confusing for those who have newly planted heart “seeds” but it’s a very natural and learned part of the Christian walk. Prayer is conversation with Jesus. It can be so simple and basic to full on (out loud) talking to Jesus in the car. It can be just sitting before Him in quiet stillness and listening to what He has to say. Please don’t omit the importance of just sitting before Jesus in stillness. Sometimes we can’t “hear” if we don’t silence the noise. The key here (much like watering a seedling everyday) is to create a daily habit of prayer time each day. What is done day in and day out becomes a habit.
- Scripture Memorization. Nothing quite makes you fall more in love with Jesus than taking the time to memorize His beautiful Word and scriptures. It doesn’t need to fancy or elaborate. Just find some Scriotures & truths from The Word that you can commit to memory. When you need their timely encouragement or reminders, they will be right there on the tip of your tongue & the depths of your heart. For example, one of my favorites to recall is Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart”. Just a reminder that no part of our life is unthought of in His book. We are chosen, loved and on purpose. When you can recall His truths, you better navigate the twists and turns of this trial filled world. More importantly, when the enemy comes breathing his empty lies, you’ll be prepared to speak Gods truth over your life.
I pray that you know how great is the pure, unconditional and truly breathtaking love of The Lord for you. Take the time to cultivate this seed planted deep in your heart. Water it daily, don’t allow the soil of your heart to dry up, spend time practicing these 3 simple things each day and you’ll be amazed at how your life produces abundant fruit in Jesus. I always say, it’s no fancy formula, it’s just simple. Spend time getting to know The One who chose you, loves you and adores you & you’ll be growing strong roots in no time.
God Bless you & your precious journey,
