So many times in my life I have faced things that I needed wisdom for. I needed the help of others to offer their love, support, thoughts and wise counsel to help me navigate some treacherous times in my life. I am grateful to those that The Lord so strategically placed around me and it is my hope that through this message, I too can offer up even the smallest morsel of love and wisdom to you.
As I sat down tonight and thought about this theme of ‘perseverance’ it occurred to me that it is the foundation we need to live a life that points to Jesus. Notice that I did not say a perfect life, but a REAL life that honors Him well. A life that can navigate the ups and downs and still remain strong and rooted in Him.
You see, who we were ‘yesterday’ is not who we are today. Our life will be full of incredible highs and some very low lows. Our ignorance and foolishness one day can become the very thing Christ uses to point others to Him, if we allow Him to use it. The pain we endure can become the platform He uses. He can bring healing and wholeness to the areas that were literally aching with pain. He brings perspective to the things we at one time could not understand. He replaces bitterness with His great love. Christ is a HEALER. He is a REDEEMER. He is all that is real, pure and true.
Jesus Christ provides us with the tools to run this race well through His Word, the Gospel message and what He did on The Cross for you and for me. May we never water down the Gospel by thinking we can do ANY of this apart from Him. Perseverance the ‘worldly’ way will always lead to burnout. With Jesus it is the very pace & breath we need JUST at the precise moment we need it.
Jesus will never call us to do something that He will not equip us to do. When you think of perseverance- it is not running uphill on our own strength & fortitude. It is saying ‘Lord, I commit my ways to you. You know what I need before I need it.’ When we take this approach, it crowds out fear and replaces it with trust. When we trust, we can persevere.
Colossians 1:11-12 reveals to us some very important details to persevering in a Godly way.
” being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”
We gain strength by HIS glorious might (not our own) and this develops within us an endurance and a patience to persist. SO many times in life we can spin our wheels until we are hidden in a cloud of smoke if we aren’t careful. Totally burnt out and exhausted. Godly perseverance is an entirely different thing. It is focusing on Christ WHOLEHEARTEDLY so that He can provide us with the supernatural strength to press on.
- We are to SEEK His face DAILY, this means giving Him our best and not our leftovers.
- We are to build intimacy with Him and gain guidance through prayer and communication with Him.
- We are to lay down what we cannot control and allow Him to do what only He can. When we do this, it removes the fatigue and gives us endurance.
- We are to TRUST HIM. As Charles Spurgeon so perfectly stated “God is too good to be unkind and He is too wise to be mistaken. And when we cannot trace His hand, we must trust His heart.”
To know the heart of Christ is to know that He will provide just what we need at JUST the moment we need it. We can’t fully know His heart if we aren’t making Him our priority. When we feel exhausted, burnt out, anxious, fearful and afraid, these are all opportunities to ‘reset’ and focus on Christ. We must do this daily. Not weekly, monthly or yearly but DAILY.
We must never take away from the POWER of The Cross and what Christ did for us by making Him an ‘option’ in our daily lives.
Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us that we are to trust in The Lord with ALL of our heart and lean not on our own understanding. In all of our ways we are to submit to Him and He will make our paths straight.
Ephesians 6:11 tells us to put on the FULL ARMOR of God so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.
Luke 21:19 tells us to STAND FIRM and we will win LIFE.
2 Thessalonians 3:13 tells us to never tire of doing what is good.
Galations 6:9 tells us to not become weary in doing good for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Matthew 22:37 tells us to love The Lord our God with all of our heart, soul and mind.
Scripture is FULL of wisdom for persevering in a Godly way. The Lord breathed His scripture and it is LIFE. He gave us His son Jesus and He is LIFE. We have the POWER of the Holy Spirit working within us to overcome the daily battles we face. We have ALL we need to run this race well.
Jesus did not leave us ill equipped. He left us MORE than able to overcome. We are NOT WEAK because of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.
My prayer for you is that you will have a renewed vigor, passion, hunger and love for Christ. That the TRUE WEIGHT of what He did for you on that Old Rugged Cross penetrates deep into your heart and that the weight of this is never far out of our mind and heart. That is gives you the passion to pursue GODLY PERSEVERANCE and to finish your race well.
